Off to Sydney today
August 30th, 2007 - Posted by Alan Howard
I woke up this morning with a splitting headache… not sure why, but it’s good to have the day off work today. I think I needed it…. In two months of working I haven’t had a single day off (apart from weekends, of course), so this is a nice day for me today.
We’re off to Sydney around lunchtime. We’ll be having lunch at McDonalds in Goulburn, about 45 minutes north of Canberra, on the way to Sydney. It’s become a bit of a tradition for us that we stop for something to eat there while on the way to Sydney.
I’ll be packing a few things this morning for the weekend, like clothes and toiletries and stuff. I’ll tell you something… It’s so freakin’ fantastic to have a laptop that I don’t need to cart around an external keyboard anymore!! Phew! I’ll also be cleaning the car. It hasn’t been cleaned for about 2-3 weeks and it’s lookin’ a bit dirty… can’t have that!
The reason we’re off to Sydney is for a 60th birthday party of one of Deidre’s aunts. That’s OUR reason, but really, it’s Deidre’s reason. Me, I’m going there to catch up with my friend Peter, who I haven’t seen for a while. That’s MY reason. :-)
I’ll see what photos I can take along the way, of course.
Wherever you are, I hope you have a great weekend.

Hmm… Isn’t that normal? I mean, 2 months isn’t that much?

If you allow the average number of sick days allowed per year (at least in Australia and New Zealand) as 10 days, then that means that for every 2 months you’re allowed 1.7 days off sick…. according to the average.
Over the past 8 months, prior to my current contract, I took time off work to organise workers installing things at our new house (back when it was new), the delivery of furniture, as well as for sickness associated with stress…
Back in New Zealand, I used to have the occasional ‘mental health day’, which I averaged about 1 day every 2 months, taking advantage of the allowed sick leave.
So my comment is in relation to my own recent history, where not having had a day off for two months is worth commenting on.
I’ll be taking a couple more days off at the end of this month, when my friend Ken comes to visit from New Zealand. A mini holiday. Woohoo!
