How to clean like a maid

January 24th, 2008 - Posted by Alan Howard

If you’re like me, you hate cleaning. You hate it so much, you try to avoid it as much as you can. Yep, that’s me!

Well, thanks to this site, you can now learn to clean like a maid and maybe, because you’ll be so much more efficient at it, you might even enjoy it too!

I know, pigs might fly too.

At the very least, being a more efficient cleaner will mean two things:

1. You’ll save money by not having to have a cleaner in any more, and
2. You’ll spend less time doing the cleaning which means you’ll have more time to do what you enjoy doing! Can’t argue with that, right?

I’ve summarised the article linked above into the following tips:

1. Top to bottom, left to right.

Always work from the top to the bottom, and from left to right. Dust falls, so as you work, you’ll clean up what’s fallen from up above.

2. Separate the work into wet and dry rooms.

Wet rooms are the bathroom and kitchen, while the dry rooms are living room, dining room and bedrooms. You’ll need different cleaning materials for each of them. Do not use the same rags in the kitchen as you used in the bathroom!

3. Material for cleaning wet rooms.

First, keep them all in a tray that you can carry from room to room. You’ll need some cleaning rags (some for washing, others for drying), an all purpose spray cleaner, glass cleaner, heavy duty all purpose cleaner, floor cleaner, toilet bowl cleaner, and a duster.

4. Cleaning the bathroom.

Put the toilet bowl cleaner into the toilet and let it sit while you do everything else.
Knock down cobwebs and dust light fixtures.
Spray counters, tubs and sinks. Spray the dirtiest parts first, then move around the room wiping everything down from left to right.
Wipe the mirror only if it’s dirty or smeary.
Use glass cleaner on fixtures to get them shiny.
Run the duster along the baseboards and cabinet fronts.
Swish the toilet.
Sweep the floor, then mop it.
You’re finished!

5. Cleaning the kitchen.

This is the same as with the bathroom, minus the toilet. And remember - use different rags for the kitchen, as you don’t want bathroom germs being spread into the kitchen.

6. Cleaning the microwave.

Put a bowl of vinegar and water into the microwave.
Cook on high for 3 minutes.
Wipe out the microwave with a rag. The vinegar will take care any strange smells and the steam will soften even the hardest baked food residue that you might have.

7. Cleaning the dry rooms.

Knock down cobwebs, dust light fixtures.
Dust all furniture and picture frames, moving from left to right.
Change the sheets on beds.
Run the duster along baseboards.
Vacuum.

If you follow all those tips every week, you’ll be able to do all the cleaning very quickly, and free up your time for more enjoyable activities.

Has someone been nagging you at home? This post is SO not like you, but good on you mate. Maybe next you could do one on cleaning windows and one on how to use an iron…from your perspective.

Maybe it’s a positive thing that you got so ‘involved’ in the method of cleaning a house. Good on ya! I know each household has its own rules that work. However I cannot imagine hubby going such length in cleaning - gotta be better things for a bloke to do in a house rather than cleaning toilets and kitchen, such as build a gadget in the garage, chop down a tree, fix something that aint working…I would rather hubby be good at ‘men’s stuff’ than ‘women’s stuff’. I would not demand him to be the same capable as me in certain things just like he cannot expect me to fix my computer!

No one has been nagging me at home. I just found an article on the web that I thought would be a good thing to have in this blog. I’m looking at presenting more articles that help people do more of the things they want to do , and since everyone has to clean their house (usually), then I figured that if you could do it faster and more efficiently, it’d help you do more of what you really want to do. :-)
