Finally

After just over 3 months of being unemployed and applying for an average of two jobs a day, I’ve finally got a new contract to start on Monday. And it was from a source that I didn’t apply with. Makes you wonder sometimes what the point of applying for jobs is. Maybe it’s just better to use your network of contacts instead. I know that some people do that…

Anyway, you’re probably wondering what this new job is about. Well, I’m not entirely sure just yet what the position title is going to be, but it’s certainly going to be an ideal role for me. It was a role created explicitly for me, when the hiring manager saw my CV passed in front of them.

“Whoah, this guy’s going to be great at upsetting the apple cart!”

I do that really well.

I’m going to be the instigator of change. A lot of people are going to hate me, I think.

I’ll be responsible for seeing what works and what doesn’t work on the service desk, and suggesting improvements and helping implement them. Currently, there are no performance measures for the staff, and no service agreements with their clients. This is just insane, and results in the staff being unaccountable for their actions, and their clients making unreasonable demands.

But then, they might like me too. Along with performance measures comes incentives to raise performance, so they might enjoy a few bonuses, etc, that they currently don’t have.

It’s a 3-month contract with the option to extend, so if I do a good enough job, it could be ongoing. I was also asked if I was interested in being made permanent, which I was, so that might be on the cards after 3 months as well.

This is going to be good to help me get back on track. Three months without work is not a good thing… Resources were exhausted, and much stress was experienced all round.

The saying ‘Never again’ comes to mind. I don’t want to go through that again. At least my father won’t be dying the next time I’m looking for work…
