Good article, Alan.
Obtaining any information outside mainstream media is useful even though it must be scrutinized with as much care as you do mainstream media.
Swine Fever....a dress rehearsal, methinks.

[...] Alanz Eyes put an intriguing blog post on Why use Twitter? Here’s a quick excerptI still have friends that aren’t on Twitter, or don’t use it very much. I think they’re like many people who are missing out, but I understand that’s only because they don’t understand the value it might have for them. So I decided to write this post to see about ‘educating’ people who just don’t get it yet. Now, I know many of these people might not think they need ‘educating’, that their life is perfectly fine without Twitter. But that’s also what they said about the internet back in the [...]

I take it you didn't read the full post, or take it all in? Not surprising, it was pretty long. But I talk about the value of Twitter through information and education, how you can learn new things, how you can be both teacher and student through your Twitter activities.

You didn't seem to pick that one up, as you seem to only think that Twitter is about 'what other people are doing'.

And yeh, I've integrated my Twitter updates into Facebook, so that I extend the audience into other mediums. People can comment on Facebook about my Twitter updates, but those comments don't get returned into Twitter... That could be a nice update in future, allowing completely integrated conversations between multiple applications.

I'm sure it'll happen.

I joined twitter in the early days and, as you said, it was full of crap. The last thing I want to do is read about every little thing that people do in their day. I get enough of that on facebook.

Speaking of facebook, it's now my primary tool for communication. I use it to organize events with my friends here in Korea, I hear about new events happening and what people are doing and have done, and I stay in touch with almost everyone I know.

I can see the point of joining Twitter if you are looking to, or have the time to explore what other people are doing. However, I don't currently feel the need to replace or supplement facebook with twitter. Firstly because I'm too lazy to use both, secondly because I'm quite content with facebook and it's many uses already.

I see that you have managed to combine facebook with twitter, which gives you visibility on both and I think that does have some merit. (I found your post through facebook) If I ever decide I need or want to expand my social network presence, I'll probably do the same.
